Rolex Oyster Perpetual Celebration Dial – Hot or Not?

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Celebration-motif dial watch is so different than what we normally see from Rolex that you need to ask some questions so you may understand the spirit of this creation.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Celebration

In 2020, Rolex released some interesting and funky colors in the Oyster Perpetual range. These included the turquoise blue, yellow, coral red, green and candy pink. Most of these colors were discontinued later and as we stand today, the Turquoise blue which is also referred to as Tiffany blue, Yellow and coral red are no longer available in production, especially in the OP41 range.

What’s this got to do with this dial?

This is arguably where the concept or this lacquered dial in Tiffany blue with differently sized bubbles comes into play and brought this watch into the flesh to celebrate all those interesting, lacquered dials, produced for a very short interval of under 2 under years, now discontinued and no longer produced.

Why the balloons?

This Celebration-motif dial as called so by Rolex, has the bubbles (or ballons) on it with black outlines in all the same funky colors that Rolex introduced in 2020, with a background in the most popular of all, the Tiffany blue. This begs the question what exactly is it that makes the name of this dial as a celebration-dial.

Is it a Special Edition?

Typically, in the Rolex world, there are anniversary releases like Rolex Submariner Kermit which was the 50th years anniversary, and then the SD43 with the red text which was also the 50th anniversary release and so on. Which means this dial officially referred to as Celebration-motif dial doesn’t really refer to any anniversary or historical significance for this watch or the dial.

What is the celebration for?

I look at this name, in two ways, one as its official name due to the pattern on the dial and other as I personally like to think it suits the best. So let’s start with why Rolex call it a celebration dial. This is, as I mentioned earlier the history of these dial colors, and with them now discontinued, this particular dial is celebrating those discontinued dials and offering all the same shades, while keeping in perfect harmony with the theme of the watch, showing those colors in small bubbles to add that quirkiness consistent with the funky colors it showcases.

How I see the colors of celebration!

The other way of looking at it when you consider those bubbles as arguably colorful balloons as if they’re celebrating a life milestone, event or a ceremony. We live in the world, where we buy these luxury and timeless watches to celebrate certain occasions, life’s milestones or simply to reward ourselves for something with something that can last many generations and beyond. And what is a better watch to celebrate that occasion or milestone with a celebration dial and all those colorful bubbles, making that perfect watch for the occasion. Come to think of it, when we are celebrating events, do we not use all the colorful balloons to mark the event? If we do, then the elements of this dial now all fall into place.

Comparison with other Oyster Perpetuals.

So how different is the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Celebration Dial compared to the other Oyster Perpetual watches? It is in fact just the dial that’s different, and rest of the watch remains entirely the same. But the dial is exactly where all fun starts and where we enjoy and admire most of the fine watchmaking at display.

Is it a collectible?

So how collectible is this dial or watch? Well, it is in production currently but I believe that given the nature of this dial, it will not be produced for maybe more than another year or two. This is purely my opinion based on what I’ve observed over the years with Rolex’s approach towards new models and releases, especially the ones that are funky in colour and the ones with motif patterns.

And if this does also get discontinued, lets say next year or in 2026, then this will indeed become a very collectible and a highly sought after timepiece. There’s practically nothing in the Rolex range like this with such bubbles. Yes, there’s that puzzle dial in the Day Date which although is again quirky and fun, it is obviously not the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Celebration dial. So is it collectible at all. I would say yes, it is, very.

A Rolex so un-Rolex:

At times the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Celebration dial looks anything but a Rolex – a watch with entirety of fun characters from otherwise a very serious and dedicated horological brand with century long history. It is weird, and arguably it may even be ugly to some, and frankly speaking, it sometimes even looks like a $50 knock off, and this is exactly why it is so special. Because in the heart, it is a Rolex. A rolex, so weird and bizzare to the point where it is almost beautiful.  A Rolex so un-Rolex that it is almost a collectible already.
