Unveiled at Baselworld 2016, the Rolex Daytona reference 116508 became the first yellow gold Daytona to feature the brand’s iconic emerald green dial. Released alongside its white gold counterpart with a blue dial, the yellow gold model quickly garnered admiration from collectors for its bold, striking design. It gained even more fame after appearing on Hodinkee.com’s popular video series, Talking Watches, where it was discussed by John Mayer as part of the renowned singer and avid watch collector’s personal collection.
The popularity and collectibility of this rare timepiece can be garnered from the recent auction result for this reference at Phillips dated 8th Dec 2024, where a 2016 example with older style white Rolex warranty card, is sold for $82,550 USD (circa $129,000 AUD before import taxes and $141,000 AUD with 10% GST for Australian customers). So this listing provides an incredible opportunity for Australian Rolex collectors to acquire a discontinued and very rare timepiece at a competitive price. The Rolex John Mayer was discontinued in 2023 and in the current line of Daytona, there’s no longer a yellow gold and green dial model produced by Rolex, making this particular reference a highly collectible and rare, especially in unpolished and Mint condition as this example we have on offer for sale. This particular piece also comes with the new-style green NFC warranty card as opposed to most of the examples you see with the white Rolex warranty card.
This particular piece for sale presents in unpolished and Mint condition, and comes as full set with boxes and papers, complete links and the green Rolex hang tag. The watch further comes with a copy of original Rolex sales invoice confirming the dial. The watch is very lightly and occasionally worn as can be seen in the beautiful condition it presents in, with factory stickers on the clasp and also on the underside of the clasp still intact. There’s also some factory stickers on the case as can be seen in the photos. The superficial marks on the polished area of the clasp that may show in the photos are on the sticker, and not on the actual clasp.
The watch is dated 2021 and is still under Rolex’s official warranty until 2026.
